Eco Sea Kayakers Shelter on Isle of ButeEco Sea Kayakers Shelter on Isle of Bute
Added: 31 Mar 2014
This fantastic resource has just been completed at the north end of the Isle of Bute. Along with the shelter, which has a great view of the Kyles of Bute and Burnt Isles, there is a barbecue and fire pit and a composting toilet sited 50m away from the shelter. With the general growth in sea kayaking and the establishing of the Argyll Sea Kayak Trail it’s really good to see facilities like this being put in place. Apart from the obvious benifits to kayakers it is great example of sustainablity where we take care of the areas we visit with high density usage. It would be great to see more of this sort of forward thinking in other areas.

At yesterdays Tiderace Scotland demo two great folk were there trying out some new Tiderace sea kayaks. Peter made the connection between my first name, Roddy and the name and address glassed into his own boat, a Skerry, the very first sea kayak I owned.
She had been built 20 years ago in 1993 and was looking great, including the day hatch retro fitted a couple of years after her construction, and many a mile traveled since. Peter had bought her just a few years ago for pretty much what I had paid for her, £800, when she was new which all goes to show that sea kayaks haven’t really gone up in price in relative terms and are a damn good investment!

Tiderace Vortex Now Now On Demo
Added: 08 Apr 2013
Tiderace’s new plastic boat the Vortex will be heading north this Friday. It’s a plastic boat that is really stiff and retains the "made to play" hard edges of the Xcite and Xtra that are a Tiderace trademark. Getting such hard edges on plastic is a technical winner.
The boat is really solid and built to take the rough, tumble and rumble of the rock garden and surf. Thankfully it doesn’t have a foam core so no dreaded osmosis from deep scores and scratches.
All in all the Vortex has play and durability written all over it and it is great to be stocking them. Demos of the Vortex are now on in Scotland most weekends.

 St Kilda Memories
Added: 13 Sep 2012
St Kilda 37 Years On In 1965 Hamish and Anne Gow of the Scottish Hostellers Canoe Club completed the first recorded paddle out to St Kilda, some 52 miles west of the Sound of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, in a Clyde Double sea kayak. This June of this year Dolina Swanson and Christine Stewart of Stornoway Canoe Club repeated the paddle in a specially built replica of Hamish and Anne’s boat. The whole process of building the kayak, the preparation for the trip and the actual crossing was filmed by Mac TV. The resulting programme, which I understand is to include an interview with Hamish and some of his 1965 film is to be shown in an hour long programme on BBC Alba at 9pm on Monday 17th September and repeated the following evening the 18th at 10pm. BBC Alba is a Gaelic language programme with English sub-titles, but a lot of this programme is recorded in English. The channel enjoys a reputation for quality programmes and has quite a following among non-Gaelic speakers. The programme web site is < www.bbc.co.uk/alba/ >. It is viewable on Freeview Channel 8 (Scotland only). By satellite on Freesat Channel 110; Sky (UK only) Channel 168 and Astra 1N 10818V 22000 5/6. By cable on Virgin Media at Channel 188 (Scotland only); on BBC i player catch up on demand and Smallworld Cable Channel 170. Also on Internet television at BBC iPlayer (UK only) (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/tv/bbc_alba/watchlive) and Zattoo (UK only). Enjoy !!!!

Added: 29 Mar 2012
This drawing is a critical incident analysis but not as you know it. It’s where the ‘cleave’ and the ‘close’ happen. It’s flow diagram, the point where the path of the paddle integrates hull shape and water, where two worlds collide.
It’s why the Xplore M is faster than the Xplore L. And its the mind of Aled Williams, without the computer assisted design lines, the maths, numbers and formula. But with the genius that is the Tiderace master boat builder.
Thanks for the master class Aled. And to the White Eagle pub, Anglesey, for the classroom.

"The recently formed SCA Touring Committee will ensure that the creation of an SCA Touring Calendar, accessible by as many SCA members as possible, is drawn up and publicised as quickly as possible.

It is my sincere hope that such a calendar will be the basis on which adventures and experiences are shared through journeys made together. I owe the SCA Touring Calendar an enormous debt of gratitude as the foundation of my own paddling career. Trip leaders taught me much and took me to places that I would never have journeyed to without their support and leadership. I hope in some small way to repay that debt in the seasons to come."

Five normally reserved women from an Edinburgh book group enjoyed lovely Spring-like conditions for a introduction to sea kayaking. Swapping books for boats they paddled some of the sheltered east coast of Bute. Lots of new skills mastered before a special lunch at Mount Stuart House cafe. Gannets, seals and sunshine accompanied them back to the cars.

Reckon the way the spindrift was flying and the surface of the water was being ripped off into the sky it was at least Severe Gale if not Storm Force in the gusts to day.
Not even the cows at Ettrick bay were out kayaking. And they usually like a paddle before milking time.

Sea kayak journeys can have a start point that is fixed by location. And they can also start in the mind. The decision to venture onto the water in a sea kayak for the first time. These three guys did both yesterday and what a fantastic day it proved to be. Sun, scenery and new skills by the bundle.

No, not the size of the waves or sea state. A visit from Mark, a features writer with The Herald newspaper. So no pressure for yours truly who took Mark out for his first sea kayak experience. Brilliant day out in the Kyles of Bute with lots of new paddling skills developed by my guest. All credit to him for still smiling at the end of a long day on the water.

Will I be smiling when I read the article on Kayak Bute? Hope so!

Used the tide to take us NW from Luing and looped round to the outside of the Garvellachs. Rather bumpy on the approach to Dun Chonnuill. Very big waves that seemed to come from no where at the point of Eileach an Naoimh. Landed at the sight of the old monastic settlement and had lunch. Iddilic.

Weird sea state on the crossing over to Lunga and Scarba. Miss timed the Grey Dog. About half/three quarters of an hour late. Made for some very technical difficult paddling against what was about a 500 meter river rapid. Too strong to paddle into but managed to eddy hop and ferry glide up/through it. River skills out in the Atlantic!

But why is he smiling? Is skill development meant to be fun? What would it be like if it was? I wonder?

Last Saturday saw us paddle south from Port Bannatyne on my home island to Garroch Head Light. After that life became a little interesting with a sizeable southerly sea running. Great fun all the way up the west side to Inchmarnock Sound and Etrick Bay. Near eight hours on the water. Nice one.
